It is known that Indian Vision Institute or IVI is a non profit trust that was established to promote excellence in vision care delivery in India. It is superb to note that this IVI is a joint venture between LV. Prasad Eye Institute of Hyderabad and Sydney based Brian Holden Vision Institute. This IVI also focuses on the vision correction plus prevention of many eye diseases and blindness etc.
This IVI or Indian Vision institute is now making news for a superb reason. It is now brought out that IVI would launch a vision centre and free spectacles would be given to those belonging to the underprivileged communities present in India and particularly in the state of Tamil Nadu, Chennai etc. For this IVI would screen eyes of the people and give spectacles for those who need the spectacles. CEO Mr. Vinod Daniel is the in-charge of this programme or initiative. The important piece of information is as many as one lakh underprivileged children in the Chennai city have been screened free of cost and free spectacles have been given to these children.
Under the National Programme for control of Blindness in Tamil Nadu, the state government provides free spectacles and screening support. According to Mr. Vinod Daniel, proper eye care is needed for around 7 to 12 percent of children in the world and majority of these children need spectacles for their proper vision. He spoke about how in the regular education system 80 percent of the teachings need visual attention. Screening programmes are held for the children who would not be able to identify the problems related to their vision. Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC is playing a superb supporting role in this by helping in identifying vision based issues in the underprivileged sections and later giving them spectacles or glasses for free of cost if they require. This was also confirmed by Mr. Vinod Daniel.
