2 Types of fares to attract passengers in SETC buses

The higher officials of the Department of Transport have suggested the implementation of 2 types of bus fares in the express buses in order to attract more passengers.

The bus fares for the government transport corporation express buses were revised upwards recently after a rather long gap of 6 years. After the revision, the bus fares have gone higher than the fares of the omnibuses.

So, the passengers ignore the government express buses and prefer to travel in the omnibuses. So, patronizing of state transport express buses is acutely affected and the revenues are poor.

So, in order to attract more passengers and to increase the revenue, the transport department officials have proposed some suggestions.

They explained that though the latest hi-tech buses have been added to the fleet, 60% buses have outlived and not fit for continuing operations. At the same time, the fares are now more than omnibuses. So, the passengers prefer the private buses for long-distance travels. Because of this, SETC is not even able to earn the revenue for the diesel.

So, it has been suggested that 2 types of fares must be introduced – one for the special holiday or festive occasions when the fares can be present charges and a 30% discount on the fare the other normal days. It is expected that the government will approve this proposal.

Presently, the luxury buses with the sleeper-berth facility to Bodi and Karur start from the Chennai MTC bus stop opposite the Egmore Railway Station. A decision has been taken to operate all the south-bound express buses to start from Egmore, Tambaram, etc. The reforms will continue to get implemented in order to attract more passengers.
