Located in South Chennai, Thirusulam is an important place in Chennai and is making sensational news now. In the year 2012, Madras High Court ban ended the quarrying of blue metal or jalli kallu from the Thirusulam cliff. It must be noted that due to the sites closeness to the city, the crushing units have stayed here and is now creating problems regarding dust. Failing to follow the measures to reduce the dust despite many complaints by the residents of Thirusulam is the issue now.
In Thirusulam there are as many as 70 crushing and m- sand units present now. It is clear that without any proper permissions plus clearances, more than 90% of these operate on temple land or beam notice land. The locals present in this place have got different jobs outside the blue metal business after the ban is known.
There are areas such as Amman Nagar, Shubam Nagar,Sami Nagar, Ulaipali Nagar etc present here and over 10000 people live in these above mentioned places. The dust released from the crushing units has affected the people very badly and these crushing units are operated by the people from Kancheepuram districts or those from other parts of Chennai city.
A resident belonging to Thirusulam expressed his views and spoke about how these crushing units are operated by the people from the above said places. He later highlighted that there are only few locals who work in these crushing units as everything is mechanised now. Most residents have got jobs in Chennai airport. The resident later explained about how due to Thirusulum crushing units proximity to different parts of the city, blue metal from different parts of Kancheepuram is brought to this place now.
Another resident belonging to Thirusulam spoke about how the repeated request by many locals here regarding the reduction of dust was not given importance by the operators. Sprinkling water on machinery and raw material were done by these operators when the locals raise their voices. The lack of proper sheds to prevent the release of dust into air is creating many issues. Some residents spoke about the TB cases plus respiratory issues like cough, wheezing etc present in Thirusulam.
