Goods movement through trains increased rapidly recent months as a result of nationwide lorry strike by the All India Motor Transport Congress. Taxation policies and fuel hike are creating a negative buzz all over the nation in terms of trade and transportation concerns.

The traders are now changing their mode of transportation stopping the dependence of road transport of goods. This lead to an increase in bookings of trains for the movement of the goods and according to the reports from southern railways the bookings are into the upward spiral in the areas of Coimbatore, Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Udhagamandalam, Tirupur, Erode, Uthukuli, Salem and Karur.

One of the officials of the Salem division of Southern Railways mentioned about the sudden increase in the bookings of transporting all kinds of goods for the trade and perishable goods such as vegetables, fruits and sugar being the dominant goods. The total volume of the parcel bookings are increased by 10% keeping the past four to five years of account for consideration. Recently two trains were booked for the transportation of 41 tonnes of perishable goods such as vegetables and eggs from Coimbatore and Erode junction carried to Shalimar and Raipur.

If the strike continues further the transportation bookings are expected to skyrocket in the areas of Ooty, Pollachi, Tirupur, Erode, Karur and Salem. Railways officials are very well helpful for the emergency transportation scenario in the goods movement throughout the nation. It came forward to offer whole goods trains with a maximum capacity of 400 tonnes within 20 wagons.
