These days there are many women who go to work. Some women shift to new places also for the sake of their jobs. The working women’s hostels help these women to live safely and securely in the new places. To improve the living conditions of women, the government of TN has decided to construct 14 more working women’s hostels across the TN state. The good news is the city of Chennai would be home to 6 new working women’s hostel soon.

In the state of TN there are as many as 28 government run hostels and for the sake of renovation many of these hostels were closed. In the city of Chennai, there are 3 working women’s hostels and 2 are located in Adyar housing as many as 120 women. One working women’s hostel is present in Vadapalani and there are 50 women in that. It is now said that soon as many as 6 working women’s hostels would come up in Vadapalani for the benefit of women. These upcoming 6 new hostels have got administrative sanction also. It must be noted that these hostels are opened for those women who earn Rs 25000 per month in Chennai and Rs 15000 in other places. This was confirmed by an official. Monthly rent of Rs 300 in Chennai and Rs 200 in other places must be paid by these working women. For food expenses plus electricity and other charges sharing system is followed. The official also spoke about how government is responsible for paying the salaries of the staffs.

There were some complaints regarding illegally run hostels in residential areas and this was confirmed by some senior officials.  An official later spoke about how they were trying to regulate the sector and how there is a need to provide a solution before closing down the illegal hostels. Government hostels would be an alternative to this as these government hostels are cleaner, safer with CCTV cameras, hostel warden etc. Moreover these government hostels are cheap.

According to Mr. Manivasan, principal secretary social welfare and nutritious meal programme, pushing for amendments in the TN Hostels and Homes for Women and Children (Regulation) Act, 2014 were done to ensure strict penal action.
