Crimes against women have been going on for a long time now. There are many efforts being taken to prevent these crimes. The superb piece of news that has come out now is women facing crime and abuse in Chennai city could approach a new special cell for women for justice and also for counselling. On Friday, 3rd August 2018, city police commissioner, Mr. A. K. Viswanathan grabbed many eyeballs when he opened this new facility.
Inorder to avail the services, the affected women can dial 94983 26002. The women approaching the centre need not worry about their details getting revealed as it would be kept as secret. This was confirmed by the police official. This new special cell for women for justice would operate at the premises of Thousand Lights police station and is opened on the purview of National Commission for Women, TN police and Tata Institute of Fundamental Sciences. It is revealed now that these types of centres would also be started in places like Salem, Madurai and Tirunelveli.
After inaugurating the centre, Mr. A. K. Viswanathan, police commissioner spoke about how the police officials at all-women police stations and at other police stations should refer the aggrieved women to the centre. He then explained the importance of experts and said police must make arrangements for inviting the experts to their police stations when needed. To instil awareness among police personnel in Chennai city, Mr. A. K. Viswanathan requested the additional commissioners of police to arrange for training sessions. The police commissioner later highlighted the importance of special cell and how minor cases could be solved by the special cell.
To overcome the sensitive issues, the special cell would assist the women. The cell would play its part in creating amicable situation by helping women to meet their family and community. The special cell would also play its role in helping the women to get the assistance of the police.
Providing legal aids and counselling to the persons who abuse the women would also be done by the special cell. Shelter as well as vocational training would be provided to the affected women.
Mr. Manivasan, social welfare secretary, TN commission for women chairperson Kannagi Bakkiyanathan etc made their presence felt in the event. It is important to note that Chennai Metropolitan police is the law enforcing agency in Chennai city and its surrounding places. Commissioner of police is the head of the city police force.
