The city of Chennai does not record very good monsoon rains during the Southwest monsoon period. Reason being that the city lies in the rain Shadow area and rainfall activity is on the higher side during the Northeast monsoon season.
During the month of August Chennai rains on the backseat only and light rains on a few occasions are observed.
In fact, the monthly rainfall for Chennai is also just about 126 mm in the month of August. This time Chennai did record rainfall on almost all days of the first two weeks of August barring a couple of occasions.
However heavy rainfall activity was ruled out throughout this period. In a turn of events Chennai rainfall took a front seat and drove as fast as it could when heavy rainfall activity was observed during the last 24 hours over most parts of the city.
In a span of 24 hours from 8: 30 a.m. On Tuesday, Nungambakkam observatory of Chennai recorded a massive 60 mm of rainfall. Meenambakkam was not far behind and 70 mm of rainfall was recorded over the observatory.
Now during the next 24 hours, weathermen at Skymet suggest that rainfall activity will reduce over Chennai and rainfall will be light with a few moderate spells only.
