Every year the Tamil month of Puratasi is attributed for changing the diet from non-vegetarian to vegetarian in terms of religion and spirituality. During this period the prices of Chicken, Mutton, Fish and other non-vegetarian food sources will eventually go down. The non veg hotels will usually see a dip in the number of customers owing to the spiritual month.
Puratasi occupies proportions of September and October months of the Gregorian calendar. The wholesale rates of fish at Kasimedu Fishing Harbor decreased from Rs 2000 to Rs 1000 in the past week. The harbor receives 150 tonnes of fish daily and the price dip will continue until the end of the sacred month. The retailers will not buy the fish from the harbor primarily because of the demand decrease.
Now the Seer fish prices at Kasimedu Fish market falls between Rs 350 and Rs 400 per Kg. The wholesale prices of trevally and pomfretare comes to the range between Rs 200 and Rs 325 per Kg. Many retail sellers reported a 50 percent dip in the sales of fish and also meat retailers planning for a price reduction to find some business in this month of Puratasi.
Now the chicken price have fallen to a considerable amount but the mutton price remains unchanged. The prices of broiler chicken dropped by Rs 40 and the price of mutton didn’t go down as the retailers are stocking up the goat for the coming festivals.
Chennai Hotels Associations mentioned a significant drop in the number of customer arrivals in the hotels where exclusive non-vegetarian cuisine are the main target. Thirty percent decrease in sales was reported by the non-vegetarian hotels operating in and around Chennai. All of these price dips are temporary as it will eventually go up after the end of Puratasi month.
