Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) is in the initial phase of replacing the overhanging electric cables with underground cable network in all of the extended areas of Chennai Corporation. The existing electric cables are prone to damage and disruptions occasionally caused as the result of bad weather, line breakages and other power fusing issues. In order to sort out these problems TANGEDCO rewired all the electric connections with underground layout. Now the extended areas of the city are also coming into the radar of underground cable connecting network zone supplying domestic and commercial power capacities.
The works for the underground cable connection is already in progress and will be opened officially within few months said the sources of TANGEDCO. Tambaram division in South and Perambur division in north zones have been selected for the pilot phase of the underground electric cable networking project. Trenchless technology is used for laying underground lines.
Many telecommunication giants use this technology for uninterrupted services for the customers. Now TANGEDCO adopts the trenchless technology for effective power distribution said the officials of the department. A budget of Rs 2,500 crore was allocated for the shift of power allocation from normal overhanging cables to underground network.
Kodungaiyur, Poompuhar Nagar, Kolathur, Sembium, Villivakkam and Retteri are the areas covered under the division of Perambur in north. Wherease the areas of Medavakkam, Selaiyur, Rajakilpakkam and Madambakkam are selected for the Tambaram division.
Tangedco floated tender last month for executing the pilot work of these two divisions. Soon the contractor will be identified said one of the officials of Tangedco. Areas such as Mylapore, T.Nagar and Anna Nagar use trenchless technology and now Tangedco aims for connecting all the power cables underground in extended areas of the city with the use of the same technology.
