The Indian Weather Bureau has issued a Red Alert warning about the prospects of very heavy rains in Tamil Nadu on 7th October.
Subsequently, the public has been kindled about this topic as the main issue of the day and sorts of discussions are being made apart from the wild spread of rumours! The public has been infested with a lot of questions regarding ‘how that day would be?!’ Would we able to do our daily chore of activities? etc.!
The recent release on the FaceBook by Tamil Nadu Weatherman offers a clear explanation!
It is mentioned that there are 4 categories of rain warning:
Green – prospects of mild rain – no precautionary action needs to be taken.
Yellow – Prospects of heavy rain in a few places – Please follow the regular announcement of the weather bureau.
Orange – Prospects of heavy to very heavy rains in a few places. Please be prepared.
Red – Prospects of widespread very heavy rains – Take all precautionary measures. The residents in the low-lying area mus shift to safer places. Disaster management activities must be in ready and alert mode.
What is very heavy rain?
Very heavy rains indicate a rainfall 20 cm to 25 cm. However, with heavy rains in a short period, there are possibilities low-lying areas getting inundated leading to floods.
Wide-spread rain indicates that there are prospects of heavy rain covering from 51% to 75% of the total area of the state. It may also indicate that without being specific about the districts in the state, it may just mention prospects of rain in most districts.
Further, please do not lead to thinking that it covers only Chennai or Kanchipuram districts. It covers the entire state of Tamil Nadu, Please rest assured and get over your anxiety as though the entire Chennai city will be submerged in flood! Please appreciate the fact that this warning is NOT MEANT FOR THE PUBLIC! It is for the administrative activities to be undertaken!
