The roofs of the MTC or metropolitan transport corporation buses in Chennai are not perfect. During rains the drivers of the MTC buses face many difficulties due to leaky roofs of the buses. A novel idea by the MTC bus drivers has put an end to this problem of leaky roofs in the MTC buses. It is now revealed that a sizeable number of drivers have fixed umbrellas over their seats so that they could avoid getting drenched by the rainwater.

Soon northeast monsoon would begin and there would be heavy rains in TN. This northeast monsoon would create huge discomfort for the MTC drivers as well as the passengers as the rainwater would seep through the floors plus leak from the roofs of MTC buses too. This was confirmed by the sources.

A driver belonging to MTC spoke his heart out on few things. He spoke about how the officials did not bother much about his repeated complaints regarding dripping of rainwater from the roof of the bus. He later threw light on how during the rains the passengers taking the window seats empty the seats as the seats become wet due to rains. He later explained about the purpose of fixing of umbrella over his seat. To protect him from getting drenched from the rainwater leaking through the roofs of the MTC bus he fixed an umbrella over his seat. He added that he and other MTC bus drivers were worst affected during the rains. This novel idea of the driver is followed by many drivers not only in the city of Chennai but also in various places in the state of Tamil Nadu now. The piece of information is the MTC buses have been monitored by the officials for the umbrellas fixed over the driver seat. The officials have suspended few drivers due to this reason.

A regular commuter belonging to Iyyapanthangal, Chennai spoke about how the officials should have taken steps to correct the issues and the buses should have undergone maintenance works before the monsoon season. Vice-president of Nethaji Transport Workers Union, Mr. M. Ramamurthy, highlighted that the mats present on the roofs of the buses should be of high quality. He further spoke about the importance of sticky tape and said sticky tape should be pasted along the roofs to prevent rainwater seeping in. He finally stated that the presence of leaky roofs in the buses indicates how MTC is running the buses in poor conditions. A senior official of MTC spoke about how MTC is on the lookout for such buses and how the remedial steps would be taken soon. In the year 1972 MTC (Chennai) was founded and it was formerly called as Pallavan Transport Corporation. In Chennai there are 3716 buses belonging to MTC in 2018.
