University of Madras to conduct 2nd convocation in this October month

This news would bring huge happiness on the faces of many students of University of Madras or MU now. On 17th of October 2018, University of Madras would be conducting its second convocation in six months. The main purpose for this second convocation is to put an end to the inordinate delay in awarding degrees to the students. It is clear that more than 70000 students who have passed out in May 2018 would get their degree certificates from the University of Madras by December 2018 and this would be 161st convocation of MU. On 5th May 2018, 160th convocation of MU took place and it attracted the attention of many because the president of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind made his presence felt is known.

Vice-chancellor, MU, Mr. P. Duraiswamy spoke about how MU is streamlining the award of degrees for the students to pursue their higher studies. He also hinted that those students who have passed out in May 2018 and those M. Phil students who gave their exams in August month would receive their degrees in the upcoming convocation. One important point is it would be first time in the recent years that the students would receive their degrees in the same year.

The vice-chancellor later explained about how the MU would send degree certificates to all the affiliated colleges before the month of December. This would enable them to hold convocation and distribute the certificates to the students. The superb piece of information is around 300 PhD scholars would receive their doctorates.

Director of IGCAR or Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, A.L. Bhaduri would be the chief guest. Mr. Ravichandran, controller of examinations, MU, expressed his thoughts. He spoke about how from the month of January in 2016 to the month of May in 2017 MU did not have any vice-chancellor and how MU could not hold convocation. The students who have passed out in the years 2015 and 2016 received their degrees only in the July 2017.

Mr. Ravichandran later spoke about how the students could download their provisional degree certificates from online and how it has got validity of 3 months and hard copy is valid until the next convocation. He also revealed that majority of foreign universities and recruiters wanted the original degree certificates and PG and PhD scholars would be benefited. He finally highlighted that PhD and PG scholars would be able to apply for their post-doctoral and doctoral studies in the current academic year itself.
