Chennai is a big city with huge population and people often find it difficult to park their vehicles on the roads. A new system to regulate parking on the Chennai roads by using an app would be introduced soon. By this the vehicle riders and drivers would be able to find empty or vacant spots near to their destination. This project would be implemented in Shanthi Colony in Anna Nagar plus in other important places in Chennai city like Besant Nagar and Marina Beach etc in another three weeks of time. On Tuesday, 16th October 2018, a meeting was held between the civic body and the shopkeepers to explain the working process of this new system and to know about how parking outside their establishments affects their business activities.

It was pointed out by the businessmen that many people parked their vehicles outside their shops and this created huge problem for their customers as these customers find it difficult to park their vehicles. It is now said that many of these issues would soon be sorted out and this was confirmed by the civil officials handling the project under the smart city programme.

In the next week a meeting would take place between civic body and traffic police and after getting feedback from the police personnel then the pilot project would begin. As many as 470 roads in Chennai city would have this new project. To supply both hardware and software for this project, the corporation has finalised the contractors. As per this project sensors would be fixed to the lamppost to monitor parking. Fees for parking would be collected and penalties would also be collected by using mobile applications. By this new app both 2 wheelers as well as 4 wheelers would be benefited because by means of this app they would be able to find vacant spots to park their vehicles near to the destination plus the apps would direct these vehicle owners to the spots by using google maps.

Online wallets could be used to pay the money once the vehicle is parked. It must be noted that the user would get an alert once the parking time finishes. This time could be extended by paying more amount of money. Fine amounts or penalties would be collected from those who do not pay to extend the parking time. For those who do not have a smart phone with them they could use e-kiosks that would be set up in these parking lots.
