In the month of December and January there would be heavy fog is well known. It is now brought out that people who want to travel to Delhi and other places in the Northern part of India would have issues as there would be flight delays due to the presence of fog. At the Chennai city airport on Tuesday, 25th December 2018, as many as 8 arrivals from Delhi and as many as 9 departures from Chennai to Delhi got delayed due to heavy fog at Delhi and that disrupted the flights at the Delhi airport.
The important piece of information is the departures were suspended for nearly 2 hours of time from 7:15 am at the Delhi airport on Tuesday. This had led to the delays and diversions. Flights between Bengaluru and Chennai were also affected because of the fog that was present in the Bengaluru city. It is said that the impact was felt throughout the day in Chennai city as planes held up in Delhi caused delays in the subsequent schedules for the day at other airports.
The schedules went awry at other airports and more than 30 flights to various domestic places like Bengaluru, Indore, Vijayawada, Coimbatore, Patna and Pune etc suffered delay for more than hour and it lead to congestion. IndiGo flight was scheduled to leave Chennai at 11:10 am but the flight left at only 2pm on the Chennai-Delhi route and other flight belonging to IndiGo was scheduled to leave at 11:20 am left only at 1:20 pm. Even in the evening time the delays continued to disrupt the flight services and IndiGo flight scheduled to leave at 5:15 pm left Chennai only after delay of one hour. Another airlines Vistara’s flight that was scheduled to leave Chennai at 5:20 pm left only at 6:50 pm.
It is important to note that Delhi airport had suspended departures and there was diversion of incoming flights from Delhi to Chennai. The flights reached after getting delayed for 2 to 3 hours.
Using the same flights for multiple routes was the cause for the delays and this was as per an official belonging to the airport. The official later spoke about how delay at any airport could affect the subsequent schedules at other airports. He then commented on the unscheduled arrival of flights and how it affects other activities at the airport resulting in delays in handling planes to other destinations. In the coming days, the travellers planning their trips to northern part of India may have to be careful as the fog usually disrupts the flights in Delhi in the first week of the January. One important point is in the last year also there were delays and diversions of flights and it created huge difficulties for the travellers.
