One of the most highly preferred locations for relaxation in the Chennai city is Marina Beach. There are many illegal vendors present in this beach is known. This illegal vendor issue would not be there hereafter. It is said that Marina Beach would be free of unauthorised vending.
On Friday, 1st February 2019, a meeting took place and it was decided that more than 2000 vendors in the Marina Beach would be realigned under by-laws framed as per Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act 2014 and Madras High Court order. This meeting had the presence of Mr. D. Karthikeyan who is the corporation commissioner and Mr. A. K. Viswanathan who is the commissioner of police. Another decision that was taken was regarding shifting the fish market from along Loop Road to that being built by the corporation.
The official belonging to corporation spoke about how besides food vendors there were also other phone repair shops and other kiosk near Anna Square. He added that all those vendors who were not authorized and enumerated under the Street Vendors Act 2014 would have to move out of the Marina Beach. The important information is a Town Vending Committee would be formed and it would decide on the authorization of the vendors. Marina Beach would soon be divided into vending and non-vending zones and periodic checks would be carried out to make sure that no illegal vendors are present. In the vending zones along the 2.5km stretch, vendors would be streamlined in rows of 2 to 9.
According to an official there would be four parallel rows along the stretch from the Labour statue to the corporation based Anna Swimming pool. He added that there would be some restrictions on the height and dimensions of the shops. The next hearing in Madras High Court is scheduled for 5th February and it is now said that before this date draft by- laws for regularisation of vendors would be in place. For fear of losing business the fisher folk do not want to go from Loop Road now. It is very clear from senior corporation officials that fish vendors would be relocated.
