Lack of mobile connectivity in the underground metro stations is creating huge issues for the commuters of metro trains in Chennai. The point is the 24 km underground section of the metro in the heart of Chennai city is a dead zone for mobile phones. This won’t be a problem anymore. It is now said that CMRL or Chennai Metro Rail Limited is installing wireless network connectivity in the metro trains and in the metro stations. By this the commuters would be highly benefited as they would be able to make free internet calls and it would be superb for them.
For the installation and commissioning of Wi-Fi services across the 45 km network of phase-1 and on the fleet of as many as 42 trains, metro rails have floated tenders. It is important to mention here that the free internet service would also be extended to the 10 km phase-1 extension from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar. There would also be this service on 10 metro trains when the operations start in north Chennai. The superb piece of news is there would be free, unlimited and uninterrupted internet services available in both metro stations and in the metro trains.
According to a metro train official, the commuters would be able to access the free internet only after they enter the paid area of the station and that is after they swipe their smart cards. He then added that this free internet facility at the metro stations in Chennai would be similar to that in the airports. The important point is Chennai metro train would be the only metro train facility in India that would provide free internet for the commuters.
The official belonging to CMRL explained that it would take atleast 10 months of time to install and provide the free internet service for the commuters. He expressed his happiness regarding the optic fibre cables installed across the corridors and said that the optic fibres would save the installation time. He finally pointed out the installation of access points in the metro stations, tunnels and in the metro trains and said these points must be integrated.
