There has been a scorching heat wave prevailing in several cities in Tamil Nadu. Due to this, the impact of heat intensity has increased considerably. So, the Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Commission has emphasised that the public should take proper protection from this heat wave.
As the cyclone, Fani developed over the Bay of Bengal, the humidity prevailing in the environment in Tamil Nadu atmosphere had been absorbed. Affected by the cyclone, the sea breeze could not blow in the direction of the Tamil Nadu region. Further, dry air from the land has been blowing from the west and northwest directions. This has led to a considerable increase in the temperature by up to 9 Degrees Fahrenheit. This is known as ‘heat wave’. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heat wave will be blowing across the state of Tamil Nadu in the next few days.
Presently, the number of days when the temperature has crossed the 100 Degrees mark has also increased considerably. As the peak of summer, known as kathiri veyil’ or ‘Agni Nakshatram’ has started, unbearably scorching heat has been prevailing in several cities in the state!
Due to this, the children and the senior citizens have been avoiding going out in the noon sessions. As the sweating increases, several people complain of dehydration and suffer. The hot wind has been blowing across in several places.
The officials from Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Commission have advised the following to protect from the extraordinary scorching heat wave:
- ‘With this phenomenal increase in the heat intensity, drink water frequently even if not thirsty.
- Wear loose, light, and white cotton clothes.
- When venturing out in the sun, wear sunglasses, footwear, caps and take an umbrella. Remember to take a bottle of drinking water.
- In order not to lose the body water content, take drinks such alt-sugar mixed water, tender coconut, household drinks such as lassi, rice gruel, lemon juice, buttermilk, etc.
- Please note that if the urine passed is yellow in colour, it indicates dehydration and lesser water content in the body. So, take the necessary first-aid treatment.
- In order to keep the environment inside the house cool, keep the windows open, especially during nights.
- In order to keep the body cool, undertake activities such as being under the fan, wearing wet clothes, taking a bath in cold water, etc.
- Take cold water in your workplaces.
- Do strenuous activities only in the evenings or nights.
- Avoid venturing out especially during noons – from 12.00 noon to 3.00 PM.
- Avoid cooking especially during the very hot periods.
- Further, ensure good ventilation with open windows if cooking.
- Note that drinking coffee or tea or carbonated drinks will lead to a reduction in body water content! So avoid taking them!
- Also, avoid taking protein-rich snack items!’
