A new washing powder has been used in recent times in the Chennai Amma Canteens for washing kitchen utensils.

It is established that around 200 kgs of peeled off fruit skins are accumulated in the juice shops every day in Chennai!

The Chennai Metro City Corporation officials who are responsible for the operations of Amma Canteens in the city have come up with the idea that these fruit-skins can be dried and powdered and used as the base for making washing powders for kitchen utensils.

In fact, they have been collecting the peeled-off fruit-skins of Orange, sweet-lime, and lemons  and dry them in the sun for 10 days and grind them into a powder form to be used as a washing powder for cleaning the kitchen utensils.

This was tested initially in some Amma Canteens - gradually, this has spread to most of the Amma Canteens in the city.

Generally, citrus-rich fruits such as lemon, orange, and sweet-lime are the main ingredients in the manufacture of dish-wash bars/powders/liquids.

The volunteer women who have been serving in the Amma canteens observe that as this newly processed powder from the dried fruit-skins is more effective in cleaning even the hard stains as compared to the dish-wash bars/soaps/liquids manufactured in the factories of private agencies!

This trend leads to the suggestion that even the housewives may try this process of drying the peeled-off fruit-skins in the respective residences and then grinding them as a powder to be used as a dish-wash detergent!
