If your kid is studying in class 5 or class 8 in TN, then this piece of news might be a bitter pill to swallow.

It is now said that at the end of 2019-20, the students of above said classes would have to appear for their board examinations. The point is the TN government has reversed this no detention policy now.

The school education secretary, Mr. Pradeep Yadav mentioned that as of now in-principle approval has been given to conduct board examinations for the students belonging to classes 5 and 8. He added that the modalities like timetable and procurement of answer sheets etc would be worked out later. He explained about how the drop outs have reduced ever since the no detention policy was implemented.

The school education secretary was unhappy that the students learning outcomes too have dropped. Point to be noted is the students who do not have the basic writing or reading skills were going to higher classes by the no detention policy.

It was later pointed out by an official that the board examinations for classes 5 and 8 would increase the burden of the directorate of government examinations or DGE. It must be noted that this DGE has been conducting board examinations for classes 10, 11 and 12 already. No detention of students up to class 8 is mandatory for states and this was according to RTE Act. Information is the centre has amended the act enabling states to detain students in classes 5 and 8 now.
