`Amma canteens` in the city will now serve dinner too.Chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced evening fare of chapatis and dal will be available from 6pm to 9pm by the end of the month.
The corporation will buy modern cooking equipment that can produce 3,000 chapatis in an hour. "A group of six women can make only 50 chapatis an hour. So, we decided to opt for this machine," said mayor Saidai S Duraisamy, during the council meeting.
The corporation estimates the demand to be around 2,000 chapatis per canteen, or 4 lakh chapatis a day at the 200 canteens. Chapatis are to cost Rs.3 each and will be served with dal and korma on alternate days.The state has allocated 4 crore to buy machines to make chapatis, dal,sambar and sambar rice. "These machines will make cooking easier,"said the mayor.
The canteens will also serve pongal, lemon rice and pudina rice by the end of the month.the councillors recommended additions such as pickle and chutneys as side dishes and herbal tea as a beverage.
