Chennai Metro Rails Madhavaram Depot Nears Completion, Set to Open in 2024

The Chennai Metro Rail`s Madhavaram depot, which is currently under construction as part of phase-II of the Chennai Metro Rail project, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. The depot, which is being built at a cost of Rs. 284.51 crore, will cover an area of 48.89 acres and will be capable of accommodating 110 metro trains consisting of three coaches each.

During a recent review of the construction work, CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique noted that the depot will house a total of 24 track lines, including 10 for stabling yard, seven for workshop bay and deep clean bay, and seven for inspection bay. In addition, a 1.4-km-long test track line will also be built.

Once completed, the depot will be utilized for metro train maintenance and cleaning. The inspection was attended by T Archunan, Director (Projects), and Chief General Manager BS Srinivas (Arbitration), along with other senior officials.

In related news, the parking lot at Arignar Anna Alandur metro station is scheduled to be closed temporarily for three months starting from March 24 for renovation work aimed at improving passenger convenience and parking operations. During this period, passengers can utilize the alternative temporary parking space that will be made available at the St Thomas Mount Metro Station. Two-wheelers can still be parked as usual at the Alandur station, according to a recent release.
