The statue of Mahatma Gandhi, located in Marina Beach and a hugely popular visiting spot, is being temporarily shifted to another place due to the progress of construction work in the 2nd Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project.

The corridor is being set up from Poonamallee to Lighthouse under the 2nd Phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project. The areas covered in this corridor are Pattinappakkam, Mylapore, Nandanam, T Nagar, Kodambakkam, Vadapalani, Porur, Ayyappanthangal, and Kattuppakkam.

The project is progressing in full swing in the section near the Marina Beach Lighthouse. Marina Beach has several statues of leading personalities and others along the beach stretch, and Mahatma Gandhi is one of them.

As giant construction equipment will be deployed during this construction phase, to prevent damage to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, located at the famous and popular Chennai Metro City Marina Beach, it has been shifted to another place.

As a precautionary measure, the statue of Mahatma Gandhi has been moved to a location 15 metres away from its original location. Once the construction work in this area is completed, the statue will be installed back in its original place.

The Chennai Metro Rail Project authorities have informed us that the public will not be allowed to visit near the statue or garland it in the current location as a safety measure.
