In the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project, construction of the metro rail tunnel in the green corridor area on Line 3, from Madhavaram to Sirucherry Chipgat, is progressing rapidly. Officials state that it will reach the Adyar river by the end of next month.

The second phase of the metro rail project in Chennai spans 116.1 km, with work underway on three lines: the 3rd line from Madhavaram to Sirucherry (45.4 km), the 4th line from Kalangarai vilakkam  to Poonamallee (26.1 km), and the 5th line from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur (44.6 km).

On the 3rd line, there will be 28 subway metro stations and 19 elevated metro stations covering a 1.2 km green corridor area. Construction of the long-distance tunnel began on February 16, with the first tunneling machine, `Kaveri,` currently crossing the Adyar river near Thiru-vika bridge en route to the Adyar junction station.

Progress so far includes the completion of 110 meters of tunneling with the first Tunneling Machine (TBM), while the 2nd mechanism (Adyar) has laid about 60 meters of tunnel. Work is being carried out in phases, with two machines expected to reach the Adyar river by the end of August. Over 200 employees are working around the clock on the project.
