Chennai Metro Rail Signs ₹4,058 Crore Contract with RVNL for 12 Underground Stations in Phase 2 Expansion

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has inked a significant contract worth ₹4,058 crore with Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) for the construction of 12 underground stations spanning all three corridors of Phase 2 of the metro rail project. Notably, this marks the first contract signed for corridor 5 within the ambitious expansion plan.

The Department issued a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) on June 20 for corridor 3, amounting to ₹1,730.60 crore, ₹1,461.97 crore for corridor 4, and ₹865.63 crore for corridor 5. The cumulative value of these three projects totals ₹4,058.20 crore. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is funding all three packages, demonstrating their commitment to bolstering Chennai`s metro infrastructure.

The scope of these three packages encompasses the construction of a total of 12 full underground metro stations, in addition to work on four other underground metro stations along the Kilpauk Metro to Taramani route, excluding diaphragm wall construction.

The contract agreement was formalized in the presence of key stakeholders, including MA Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL; T Archunan, Director (Projects) from Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE); and Kamalakara Reddy, Chief Project Manager from M/s Rail Vikas Nigam Limited. This momentous development reflects CMRL`s commitment to expanding its metro network and enhancing public transportation in Chennai.
