The State Government of Tamil Nadu has planned to renovate the railway stations in the MRTS (Mass Rapid Transit System) from Chennai Beach to Velachery to resemble the present Chennai Metro Rail Stations.
The MRTS operates on an elevated platform, covering the route from Chennai Beach to Velachery. Along this corridor, you can find Chepauk, Mandavelli, Greenways Road, Kotturpuram, Thiruvanmiyur, Taramani, and Perungudi Railway Stations.
As a measure to alleviate acute traffic congestion on the main roads of Chennai Metro City, lakhs of passengers utilize the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to commute to their workplaces (factories/offices) and educational institutions (schools, colleges, and universities).
In this context, regular commuters and passengers on the MRTS corridor have raised concerns about the inadequate toilet facilities, shops, and the overall cleanliness of many areas, which are often marred by garbage. Consequently, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has decided to assume control of the railway stations along the MRTS corridor and undertake their renovation to bring them in line with Chennai Metro Rail Stations. This transformation will include the addition of commercial complexes, eateries, vehicle parking facilities, and upgraded toilet systems.
The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has issued a tender to select the organization responsible for developing the draft plan and executing this project.
