The Chennai Metro Rail`s Phase 2 project has reached an exciting milestone with the launch of tunneling work at Chetpet. Officials from the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) have announced that "Siruvani," the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), began operations last week, embarking on a 700-meter journey from Chetpet to Sterling Road. This development is part of an ambitious plan to complete the tunneling work by April of the following year.
As the project picks up pace, this significant development signifies a crucial step in expanding Chennai`s metro network. The TBM will adeptly navigate through the underground terrain, traversing beneath the Cooum River for a brief section before emerging at Sterling Road. The entire tunneling endeavor is slated for completion within the next six to eight months, aligning with the targeted April timeline for project conclusion.
To ensure the project`s success and safety, comprehensive soil tests have been conducted at regular intervals of 25 meters to precisely understand the geological conditions. This meticulous approach has led to the selection of a TBM ideally suited for the specific underground conditions.
The initiation of tunneling work at Chetpet is set to inject fresh momentum into the Chennai Metro Rail`s Phase 2 project. This expansion promises to improve connectivity and ease transportation for Chennai`s residents. As the city continues to grow, the expansion of the metro network is a significant stride toward achieving a more efficient and sustainable urban transport system.
