In a groundbreaking development for Tamil Nadu, the inaugural ceremony of the Intellectual Property Rights Cell (IPRC) took place at Dr. MGR Medical University. This marks a significant step in safeguarding innovations and artistic creations through legal protection under intellectual property rights (IPR).
Dr. MGR Medical University, in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu State Forum of Science and Technology, Technical Information, Forecasting, and Evaluation Forum, organized a two-day state-level workshop on Thursday and Friday. The primary objective of this workshop was to seek legal recognition for innovative and groundbreaking discoveries within the medical field.
During the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. K. Narayanasamy, in his presidential address, announced the establishment of the University`s first Intellectual Property Rights Cell. This new initiative is aimed at assisting students from the University`s affiliated medical and paramedical colleges in obtaining legal recognition for their numerous innovations.
Despite the continuous stream of innovative discoveries made by medical students in areas related to public health, disease prevention, and control, these achievements often lack the necessary patent protection. Acknowledging this gap, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized the importance of the newly established Intellectual Property Rights Cell. This resource will enable students from over 700 affiliated institutions to protect their intellectual property and benefit from their innovative contributions.
Dr. Manu Santhanam, Dean of (IC & SR) IIT-Madras, and Dr. R. Srinivasan, Member Secretary of the TN State Council for Science and Technology, also shared their insights during the event. Notably, more than 600 students from the University`s affiliated colleges actively participated in the workshop, underscoring the significant interest and importance of this intellectual property rights initiative in the medical field.
