In response to the intensified northeast monsoon brought on by the `Michuang` cyclone, the Tamil Nadu government has declared the closure of all schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Thiruvallur, and Kanchipuram districts on Wednesday, December 6. This decision follows two days of substantial rainfall, leading to flooding in various areas and disruptions to normal life.
The cyclone, situated about 250 km off the coast in the Bay of Bengal, brought heavy rain and strong winds to the coastal regions, including Chennai and its surrounding districts. Fishermen were advised to exercise caution as the sea became turbulent, with waves reaching speeds of 85 km/h.
Educational institutions, private organizations, banks, financial institutions, and public sector enterprises in the affected areas were already notified about the general closure on both December 5 and December 6. The persistent heavy rain replenished water sources in many areas, providing relief from water scarcity issues faced by the public.
