To ensure the safety of revelers during the New Year`s Eve celebration on Sunday (December 31), Chennai`s traffic police have released information about road diversions and parking arrangements.
Marina Beach Area Diversions:
- Foreshore Service Road and Kamarajar Salai (from War Memorial to Light House) will be closed for vehicles heading towards Marina Beach from 7 p.m. on Sunday to 6 a.m. on Monday.
- For those heading to Elliot`s Beach in Besant Nagar, closures will be in effect on 6th Avenue, along with junctions of 5th Avenue, 4th Main Road, 3rd Main road, 16th Cross Street, and 7th Avenue, from 8 p.m. on Sunday to 6 a.m. on Monday.
Traffic Diversions for Marina Beach:
- Vehicles from Adyar going to Kamarajar Salai will be diverted via Greenways Road and South Canal Road junctions towards Mandaveli, R.A. Puram 2nd Main Road, R.K. Mutt Road, and Luz Mylapore.
- Vehicles from Dr. R.K. Salai going to Kamarajar Salai will be diverted through V.M. Street junction, R.K. Math Road, Luz junction, Mandaveli, and South Canal Bank Road to reach Santhome High Road and Greenways Road.
- Vehicles from the north in Parry`s corner heading towards Kamarajar Salai will be diverted at RBI subway (north) towards North Fort Wall Road, Muthusamy Road, and Anna Salai.
- The Loop Road from South Canal Bank Road to the Light House junction will be closed for vehicular traffic.
Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) Bus Diversions:
- MTC buses bound for north Chennai from Greenways Road will be diverted through South Canal Bank Road, Mandaveli, V.K. Iyer Road, St. Mary`s Road, Luz, and Royapettah.
- Buses coming from the north will be allowed to proceed via RBI subway to reach Wallajah Point through Muthusamy Road, Anna Salai, Cathedral Road, V.M. Street, Luz, and Mandaveli junctions.
Parking Arrangements:
- Single-line parking will be available at Swami Sivananda Salai, Wallajah Road, Bharathi Salai, PWD Office Road, Dr. Besant Road, Lloyds Road, and Queen Mary`s College campus for Marina Beach visitors.
- Elliot`s Beach visitors can use parking facilities on one side of Besant Nagar 4th Avenue, 3rd Main Road, 4th Main Road, 5th Avenue, 2nd Avenue, and 3rd Avenue.
Other Precautions:
- All city flyovers will be closed for traffic from 10 p.m. on Sunday to 6 a.m. on Monday.
- The traffic police urge everyone to avoid drunk driving, speeding, triples, helmet-less riding, and creating noise pollution. Violators will be penalized under the Motor Vehicles Act, with the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition and closed circucuit television cameras.
