If you ask any Tamil cinema goers in south Chennai about their favourite cinema hall, then many of them would reply as Udhayam theatre complex only!!
It is true that the film goers would never forget their experience of watching their favourite heroes in action at this highly popular Udhayam theatre in Ashok Nagar in Chennai. One of the iconic cinema halls in Chennai is Udhayam theatre.
The shocking news is that Udhayam theatre would be demolished soon and a residential complex would be constructed on the land of 1.31acres.
It must be recalled that the Udhayam theatre complex, first multiplexes in Chennai, came up on land purchased from TNHB under a conditional sale deed in the year 1983. It is noteworthy that the plot has Udhayam, Mini Udhayam Suriyan and Chandran. Actor Rajinikanth`s film Sivappu Sooriyan was the first film that was screened at this theatre.
Mr. Sanjay Chugh city head and director, Anarock group spoke about how the standalone theatres are in the prime locations in Chennai and how the owners are selling them to real estate developers due to financial losses. He added that as the FSI is high now a multi storey complex would come up.
The closing down of the iconic cinema theatre has not gone down well with many film buffs. They spoke about how they had celebrated the success of actor Rajinikanth`s films at this theatre complex in the past.
It must be noted that about 300 theatres in TN were on the verge of closing down soon. This was mentioned by Mr Sridhar, secretary, TN Theatre Owners Association. He threw light on how the theatre owners were unable to pay even electricity bills also. He concluded that there were 1226 screens and the surge in the OTT viewership has led to huge financial loss for most of the theatres across the state.
