Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa who felt that the poor and weaker sections will be affected very much because of the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities opened Amma Canteen from February. This was a great boon to the people. After the great success of this she opened 31 vegetable stalls which sold vegetables at a very lower price than the open market. So far 540 tons of vegetables have been sold out through these outlets.   The vegetables include onions and small onions.

The onion prices have gone beyond the boundaries. In order to curb this menace, the Tamilnadu Government finds out where the onions are harvested and acquire them directly from the farmers at a good price. The price will be fixed by the Government and distributed. Food Department Secretary M P Nirmala and other higher officials are concentrating on this work.

Onions harvested in Surandai in Tirunelveli District are being sent to Kerala. Now the Government has intervened and is procuring the onions from the farmers.

Similarly vegetables are procured from farmers in Tamilnadu as well as other states.
