A sensational plan by MTC in Chennai now regarding increasing the safety of pedestrians and bikers etc!!
The news that has come out now is that MTC or Metropolitan Transport Corporation is retrofitting the buses with Under Run Protection devices. The main aim of this would be to avoid fatalities in road accidents.
According to MTC Chennai is upgrading its fleet with a significant safety enhancement by installing under run protection devices. This would increase the safety of bikers and pedestrians etc.
By means of these Under Run Protection devices, bikers and pedestrians could avoid getting caught under the large vehicles like buses etc during accidents. In the past, there were many incidents of bikers overtaking large vehicles and getting caught under the vehicles.
For the safety upgrade, 2212 buses have been selected by MTC. Point is that in phase 1, as many as 600 buses have been equipped with Under Run Protection. As many as 1612 buses were selected in the second phase. As many as 715 MTC buses have been fitted with safety measures. It must be noted that the ongoing installation of safety measures has been proceeding at full swing.
As the schools across TN are reopening on 10th June, the MTC has informed the school students that they could use their old bus passes to travel in the buses. The MTC would allow free travel for the students in the buses if they wear school uniforms.
