Environmentalists happy with the ban on beach sand mining

State Government has imposed strict ban in five coastal districts on beach sand mining recently. The mindless attitude of continuous usage of heavy machinery has led to the flattening of the sand dunes along the coastal areas. Moreover, the sand that is carried over to extract minerals has never been returned to its original places. This has a serious effect on ecology disturbing the natural balance of the surrounding area and exposing the entire place to tsunamis and cyclones.

U G Devasahayam, managing trustee of ‘Sustain’, an NGO organization for environmental issues and Nityanand Jayaraman the popular environmentalist are happy on this ban by our Govt.
