Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru announced on Saturday that the number of wards in the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will be increased. Speaking on the third day of the Tamil Nadu Assembly session, he noted that Chennai, with a population of 8.9 million, currently has 200 wards. Each ward, on average, serves over 40,000 people.
City Mayor R. Priya had previously discussed these plans, mentioning potential expansions to include areas like Tambaram. Minister Nehru confirmed that work is underway to increase the number of wards, which will also increase the number of representatives for Chennai residents.
