As 4.50lakh people have left Chennai to their native places for celebrating the festival of vinayagar chathurthi with their families etc, the roads were full of traffic and the buses and trains etc were overcrowded.
Since afternoon yesterday, the Koyambedu – Maduravoyal road was brimming with traffic. In addition, there were many people on the roads in Chennai due to the festival purchases etc. At the major bus terminus like Madhavaram, Kilambakkam and Koyambedu etc, there were lots of people who waited for the buses to go to their hometowns. The GST Road in Tambaram was full of people. Yesterday alone, about 4.5lakhs people went to their hometowns in buses and trains.
It is shocking to note that many travelled in the unreserved compartments of the trains plus on the footboards of buses. This was especially witnessed in the buses that were going to the southern places in TN.
It was mentioned by some officers belonging to the transport dept that the arrival of the passengers has been monitored continuously and the officials have been issued instructions to operate the buses. Point is that enough buses would be operated for the passengers to return home.
