The weather department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rains in seven coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu, on Saturday. Heavy rain, triggered by Cyclone Fengal, began affecting these areas from Friday night, causing waterlogging in several parts of Chennai, including Velachery, Madipakkam, Alandur, Porur, and Anna Salai.

03.30 PM: EMU Services Revised on Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu Section

Due to heavy rains and waterlogging, EMU services on the Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu section have been revised.
- Chennai Beach - Tambaram services will now operate only up to Pallavaram.
- Chengalpattu - Chennai Beach services will run between Chengalpattu and Vandalur.

The University of Madras Institute of Distance Education has postponed the undergraduate examination originally scheduled for December 1, 2024 (FN and AN). The exam will now take place on December 15, 2024.

Chennai Metro Rail is running trains as per the regular schedule on both corridors. However, due to waterlogging at certain stations, the lifts have been switched off as a precautionary measure.

Cyclone Fengal has moved west-northwestward at 13 km/h over the past six hours. At 5:30 AM today, it was located near latitude 12.3°N and longitude 80.9°E, about 120 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 110 km southeast of Chennai. The cyclone is expected to move nearly westward and cross the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, near Puducherry, as a cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 70-80 km/h, gusting to 90 km/h, by the evening of November 30th.

The IMD has issued the following storm warning signals:

- Signal 7: Puducherry, Cuddalore
- Signal 6: Chennai, Ennore, Kattupalli
- Signal 5: Nagapattinam, Karaikkal

Moderate rains are expected to continue in central Chennai, with new clouds developing as long as the cyclone remains over the open sea. Intense to very intense rains are forecast for Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu.

Rainfall in Chennai`s catchment areas is hoped to improve lake storage levels:

Poondi: 17%
Chembarambakkam: 62%
Redhills: 72%

Since 6:00 AM, parts of north and south Chennai have received 130 to 150 mm of rain.

11.03 AM: In response to the cyclone and heavy rain alert, the Madras Jewellers & Diamond Merchants` Association has announced that all jewellery shops in Chennai and its suburban areas will remain closed on Saturday.

10.39AM: Mamallapuram is experiencing gusty winds and heavy rainfall as Cyclone Fengal moves closer to the coastline.
