Coastal and delta districts of Tamil Nadu are set to experience heavy rainfall starting December 16 due to a new low-pressure system expected to form over the Bay of Bengal, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

- December 17-18: Rainfall intensity to increase, with heavy rain forecast in six districts.
- Orange Alert: Issued for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal for December 17.

- Significant rainfall observed across the State:
- Oothu (Tirunelveli): 54 cm
- Ambasamudram & Kovilpatti: 37 cm each
- Seasonal rainfall already exceeds the average, with Tamil Nadu recording 53.4 cm against an average of 44 cm.

The active monsoon and frequent weather systems have led to surplus rainfall, with five districts recording exceptionally high levels.
