From Monday Arignar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur zoo) authorities have begun a program where the donor can step into the animal’s enclosure for a day.
Taking care of the animals involves taking part in the preparation of food, feeding them and cleaning their cages. “Initially, this adoption program is only for five categories of animals and birds -- birds of prey, terrestrial birds, aquatic birds, marsh birds and tortoises. A total of 35 individuals will be selected as volunteers. The daily feeding cost is available with the zoo. Taking into consideration the number of animals and the days they want to care for them, they can donate the amount,” said a zoo official.
Volunteers will be taught the basics of handling these animals, he said, adding that the zoo authorities had ensured that the animals would not spread infections.
The new plan is part of the zoo’s overall animal adoption program which was launched in 2002. In 2010-11 individuals, private companies and banks took part in the adoption drive and donated 23 lakh.
Those interested in the program can send a demand draft to the zoo or deposit the amount in the zoo’s bank account. For details, call 9445427043 or contact directoraazp1@gmail.com.
