Natural Fertilizer from Garbage- Cantonment Record

The Cantonment area of Pallavaram has successfully entering the fourth year of formulating natural fertilizers from compostable cluster of garbage.

It covers around 3,192 acres and constitutes 7 wards. Nearly 14,000 families’ resident here and 142 cleaners are working for garbage collections. To separate out the compostable and non- compostable waste, separate containers have been supplied to the workers.

Daily, nine tons of garbage has been collected. In this, 3 tons of the compostable garbage is directed for fertilizer manufacturing and 2 tons of non compostable garbage is set for recycling process. Rest of the 4 tons garbage is taken to the Perungudi garbage dump yard.

The ‘Hunt in Hand’ India organization is taking care of garbage disposal. They involve in the production of fertilizers from compostable garbage and send it back to the Cantonment. Around 1000 kilo fertilizers have been manufactured per week. And 1 kilo fertilizer has been sold for Rs.10.

Cantonment head officers, Prabhaharan states that they have successfully completed three years in converting waste into useful fertilizers. The ‘Hunt in Hand’ director states that, to prepare 500 ton of fertilizer, 2500 acre of land is more than enough and also because of recycling the garbage will prevent mosquito breeding and Contagion dieases.
