If you need rice at a rupee per kg, you ought to get packets of costly goods from us, state the authorities from public distribution outlets across the Chennai city.

As per the public distribution system, people are getting provision items at subsidized prices: rice at Re1/kg, urad dal at Rs 30/kg, sugar at Rs 13.5/kg, palm oil at Rs 25/litre, kerosene at Rs 14/litre, etc. But, the sad part of it is people are cornered to buy items like tea powder, coffee powder, eucalyptus oil, maida, rava, etc at the range of Rs 19 to 40 per item. This in turn seems to be an unnecessary and unwanted expenditure for the consumers. This is in fact an act of violating the consumer protection act, 1986.
