On the first stage of counting, it has been found that there are more than 2,00,000 trees in the areas and lands of companies and institutions. Almost 60% of the trees are located in South Chennai.
Counting of trees in Chennai and suburbs commenced in 2011. This statistics will be used to ascertain whether there is the right proportion of trees as per the population, vehicles, and the factory/company areas. More trees are to be planted if any shortfall is found in this ratio.
Good number of trees has been located in IIT, Children’s Park, Raj Bhavan, and Anna Univrsity.
The statistics organizer told that the number of trees has exceeded 2,00,000. However, some trees, more than 200 years’ old, had to be cut for the Metro Rail work. 60,000 trees may be located in Adyar & Guindy are alone. Anna Nagar also has a good number of trees. The trees planted on the roadsides have not played any major part as per the count.
Tree planting should be properly planned taking into account the type of soil, etc. Chopping of trees should not be permitted. More trees are to be planted in North Chennai.
