The eligibility criteria for OBC students in attending the National Eligibility Test (NET) has been lowered by the University Grants Commission on Thursday. For those who are unaware, NET is an entry level examination for pursuing a teaching career in higher education institutes.

Previously, OBC candidates had to obtain 55 per cent for being eligible for the exam, but now, it is reduced by 5 per cent and the eligibility is now 55 per cent altogether in the three major subjects. So finally, OBC students and SC/ST students will be on par in terms of the qualifying score.

The reason behind lowering the eligibility criteria is the higher number of vacant positions in OBC and SC/ST categories. Over 40 per cent faculty seats are vacant out of which these two categories hold a major portion. Besides, there was also a court case behind the decision on change in eligibility.
