The president of the Chennai Meteorological Centre, Mr. Y E A Raj informed that the average temperature of the planet is expected to rise by 4 degrees by the end of this year.

As a part of the World Weather day celebrations, a seminar was organized on Monday (24th March) at the Meteorological centre in Chennai on the topic, ‘Youths’ role in changing climates’.Mr. Y E A Raj delivered the inaugural speech.

The atmosphere is severely polluted with the release of carbon-di-oxide by burning petroleum products. In the year 1750, carbon-di-oxide was 280 ppm (Parts Per Million). In the year 2914, it has increased to 399 ppm! It is expected to rise to 500 ppm by the year 2100.

The average temperature has raised by 0.45 degrees Celsius due to the phenomenon of global warming. By the end of this century, this may further raise by 4 degrees Celsius. Hence, we have to reduce emission of toxic gases. There is little awareness about this aspect among the youth.

Youth have to come forward to help solve the problems of global warming and other climatic changes.

Youth have to participate in the search for alternative energy sources. They should take up Infra structure on computer based weather study, water related study, and study of atmosphere is essential. The youth should come forward to participate in this field.

Chennai University Geography Professor, Mr. R. Jagannathan, SRM University research Centre Director, Mr. D. Narayana Rao, and Chennai Meteorology Centre Director, Mr. S. R. Ramanan participated in the seminar.
