As part of enhancing the solid waste management strategy, Avadi municipality is in plan of collecting service taxes on gathering garbage from the doorway of the populace.
Few weeks ago, a decree to collect Rs. 50 as monthly amount owing to door-to-door pool of garbage, has been accepted by the municipal council.
Residents of Avadi and Pattabiram, showed their distress over the prolongation of the service. They suggest that, the local civic body should have been implementing the proposal on a trial basis, supported by minimum fees for a set of period.
As of now, only 45% of the total 110 metric tons of garbage breaded daily is being gathered from the doorsteps because of the scarcity of the manpower and funds crisis.
The Avadi municipal commissioner S. Sivasubramanian stated that a similar system of garbage collection has been already in role in civic bodies like Sembakkam and Peerkankaranai where the garbage is being collected two-folds per day.
Anyway municipality officials declared that, the residents of the certain locations will be discussed on the decisions of the council and even their ideas well before implementing the tax proposals.
Also, this revenue from the service tax collection will be used to preserve the bio-methanation plant in the proposed area, officials added.
