With just 3 days to for the parliamentary elections, there is a serious crisis of power shortage following the failure of power generation at Vallur,North Madras, and Ennore Thermal power stations.

National Thermal Power Corporation, in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, set up a thermal power station at Vallur comprising of 3 units of 500 MW. Out of these, 75% of 2 units’ power generation is commercially made available for TNEB. The power generated from Vallur pwer station is fed to the substations at 400kV to Thiruvallur, Alamadi, Maraimalainagar, Kanivandhapattu, and North Madras.

Early morning yesterday, there was a problem at the Alamadi substation. Power generation was stopped at Vallur power station. TNEB owns power stations at North Madras & Ennre. North Madras has 3 units of 210MW. There was  a problem in the second unit and it was stopped.

Ennore thermal power station has 1st Unit (60), 2nd Unit (60), 3rd unit (60), 4th unit (110),5th Unit(110) for a total of 450MW. While the 5th unit has been shut-down for a long period due to some technical problems, the other units are not generating the full capacity. The 4th Unit is already under shut-down. Due to some problem, the 3rd unit was also stopped yesterday.

This has led to a condition when long hours of power-cut may have to be enforced.

Due to some problems in 2 of the 3 transmission lines from Vallur, generation could not be transmitted. People are on the job to restore the power.
