Presently, Metro rail is fetching back the turntables, an apparatus that aids to twist trains and locomotives in diverse routes.

Till 1960s, these turntables have been largely employed at the railway yards mainly in the Royapuram and Egmore stations. These turntables are massive circular tables, fixed along with the tracks.

The turntables functioned in such a way that, as the steams locomotives will be drifted in one direction, the locomotives will be driven off in the opposite direction. But latterly, invasion of the bi-directional diesel and electric locomotives, the turntables has been put aside.

After a number of decades, now metro rail is bracing this technology. About 3 turntables have been framed up at metro rail`s Koyambedu depot.

With the support of the digital technology, the turntables will facilitate turning bogies, wheel sets and axles of metro rail trains for upholding. The wheel sets ought to be preserved periodically and are completed after cracking them from coaches.

A turntable of 3500mm in diameter is used for standard gauge metro rail. The decks rest on core pivots at the centers and castors on the peripheries for revolving. Hence this equipment put away space, says an official.

In addition to the Chennai metro rail, these turntables are also employed in metro rail depots in Delhi and Mumbai.
