The Chennai Corporation will commission odorless bins to collect garbage. Its senior officials met with representatives of various organizations on Tuesday to identify suitable technology for the project.

“The odourless bins are likely to be commissioned in congested commercial areas in the first phase. Technology for the project may include deep collection system of municipal solid waste,” said an official.

Over 60 per cent of the bin will be installed at a depth of 1.5 metre. The vertical design means that only 40 per cent of the bin is visible. The total height of the bins in one of the options will be 2.5 metres. “The design will help compact the waste, with older garbage being pushed down and later ones piled above. Intervals of emptying can also be adjusted,” said an official.
