There are 19000 school vehicles operating in Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, vans, autos, and share-autos do part-time service to pick-up & drop school children.

The schools are set to reopen on 2nd June. As such, the checking of all school transports has been intensified.

Special regional squads have been formed to check the quality, safety, proof of qualification, and all other important aspects about all school vehicles in Tamil Nadu. The squads have started their checking operations from 7th May.

So far, checking has been completed for 8,735 school vehicles. Out of this, 487 vehicles were found lacking in safety aspects and had other defects. The permits to run these vehicles have been cancelled. The concerned authorities have been ordered to repair the same.

District-wise vehicle checks are in progress.

  • The parents of the school children must obtain and keep the details & record of the vehicle drivers & assistants.
  • Appoint an individual who will be responsible for thorough monitoring of children’s safety during their travel.
  • The schools should keep in regular touch with the officials at the nearest police station for consultation and follow-up if required.
  • Regular meetings should be conducted between the parents & the school authorities on the requirement of children, their behaviour, and safety.
  • Keep all the school vehicles under best running condition by regular checking & maintenance.
