During the recent Chennai Corporation meeting, the councillor for Ward No. 115, Mr. Vijayaramakrishna, raised the question whether more Amma Canteens would be opened in all wards.

Mayor Saidai Duraiswamy replied:

Originally, 1000 Amma Canteens were planned to be opened to provide low-priced high-quality food for the poor, and daily-wage earning community.

In the first stage, 200 Amma Canteens were opened in 200 wards (1 per each ward).

Amma Canteens are now functioning at the Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital, Stanley Medical Hospital, and Egmore Children’s Hospital also.

Recently, Chapattis & Dhal are being made and sold in 203 Amma Canteen during the evenings.

Amma Canteens are set to open shortly in Kilpauk Government Hospital, RSRM Government Medical Hospital, and Kasturba Government Hospital. Infrastructure is nearing completion. Sales will start once they are completed.

There is a plan to start another 200 Amma Canteens at 1 each for the 200 wards. Locations for the Amma Canteen are being finalised. Once this is complete, the canteens will start functioning.
