Metro rail likely to fix its minimum fare as Rs 10

The soon expected Metro Rail operation in the city has made revisions in its tentative fares from Rs 8 to Rs 10. This, however, is lesser than the price public owe for raveling in air-conditioned Volvo buses run by Metropolitan Transport Corporation which has its minimum fair as Rs 15, despite being slower than metro rail. Consider commuting between Washermanpet and Airport, the travel time in a bus would be 2 hours, whereas in metro rail is just 40 minutes.

On discussion, a CMRL official said the department has to consider fares of metro rail in other cities too. The fare in Bangalore is Rs 10 and the same is to be fixed for Chennai too, he added. Denominations of these tickets will be 10, 13, 17, etc. Fare for travel between Washermanpet and Airport is Rs 40. This is however prone to changes in days closer to commencement of metro rail services.
